NanoPacific Holdings, Inc. Announces License of Patent Portfolio from University of California at Santa Barbara for Synthesis of Polypeptidic Nanostructures
Los Angeles, CA – September 28, 2009
NanoPacific Holdings, Inc. (NPH) announces the acquisition of a license from University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB) for six issued and pending patents covering technologies related to the synthesis of block copolypeptides. Under the terms of the agreement between NPH and UCSB, NPH will have a non-exclusive worldwide license to key intellectual property that enables the facile synthesis of polypeptidic nanostructures. The licensed technology involves metallic initiators that are able to control the addition of N-carboxyanhydride monomers to a growing polypeptide chain. This particular technology is synergistic with NPH’s nanoemulsion platform.
“We are pleased to have licensed this technology and suite of six patents from UCSB which further strengthens our intellectual property portfolio and give us the requisite freedom to operate as we develop product candidates for various commercial and biomedical applications, stated Joseph A. Boystak, Chairman & Co-CEO. It also strengthens our ties with Professor Tim Deming, Chairman, Bioengineering at UCLA who developed this technology while at UCSB and is one of the founding scientific partners of NPH”.
“We are gratified that we are able to broaden our involvement within the University of California system and selectively add to our portfolio of cutting-edge IP,” said Michael Flesch, Vice Chairman & Co-CEO.
“The technology licensed by NPH allows unprecedented control over the preparation of polypeptide materials for a variety of applications. It will also allow the further development of polypeptide based vesicles, gels and nanoemulsions for commercialization. I am pleased that my interaction and involvement with NPH has allowed us to develop this technology together,” said Tim Deming, Chairman, Bioengineering, UCLA.
About the University of California at Santa Barbara - The University of California at Santa Barbara is a leading research institution that also provides a comprehensive liberal arts learning experience. With an enrollment of over 21,000 students, UCSB is one of only 62 institutions elected to membership in the prestigious Association of American Universities. And the Newsweek guide to America's best colleges has named UCSB one of the country's "hottest colleges" twice in the past five years. In addition to five winners of Nobel Prizes, UCSB's faculty includes many elected members or fellows of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (25), the National Academy of Sciences (30), the National Academy of Engineering (28), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (38). Three UCSB professors also have been named MacArthur Fellows by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
